I’ve lived in Florida – and more specifically, the Winter Park area – for 12 years now. And I’m embarrassed to admit that it took me that long to go on the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour. And now that I’ve done it, I’m not sure why I waited so long! I mean, where else can you see the house that Mr. Rogers lived in when he went to Rollins College?
It may have been a dreary, un-Florida-like day, but the hour-long tour was still beautiful and our guide Wendell was incredibly informative as we toured three of the five lakes in the Winter Park chain of lakes. Our tour started in Lake Osceola and took us through the Fern Canal to Lake Virginia. After gawking at multi-million dollar homes on Lake Virginia, we took the canal back to Lake Osceola, then the Venetian Canal to Lake Maitland (which is the largest in the chain of lakes). While the homes on the lake are incredible, it’s the canals, which were once used for logging, that I found most interesting. The narrow, shaded canals are home to boathouses of many of the lake’s residents and since they allow two-way traffic, you may find yourself having to back up in a bit of a tight spot!
